This paper describes the need for workplace innovation policy and practice in Europe and evaluates programmes that have already been developed. Workplace innovation is defined as the implementation of new and combined interventions in the fields of work organisation, HRM and supportive technologies. Workplace innovation is considered to be complementary to technological innovation. We argue that improvement of quality of working life and organisational performance can be achieved simultaneously. This gives new challenges for companies, trade unions, governments and researchers.
